Drag car racing happens to be one of the most popular motorsport racing venues within the United States. Its history although somewhat tainted by first being illegal street racing, started around the late 1940s and early 1950s. Racing in a dragster race means covering a rather short distance of usually a quarter of a mile in a very short amount of time. Even today, illegal street racing has been a very popular sport often encouraged through gambling also.

The NHRA or National Hot Rod Association produces most of the dragster races within the United States. These events will usually cover a range that includes many different classes however not all events will have all classes included. The fastest class will be the Top Fuel Dragster class which exists in the NHRA and additionally in the IHRA which is known as the International Hot Rod Association.

Classes of drag racing cars will include:

Top Fuel Dragster (abbr. TF/D) (located both inside the IHRA and NHRA). The rail dragster cars, or "diggers", the quickest class of drag car—in this class of car you they will use 100 percent nitromethane fuel. Also in existence will be the Top Alcohol where they use 100% methanol or ethanol (TA/D).

Top Fuel Funny Car (TF/FC) (located both inside the NHRA and IHRA) Almost as quick as the diggers, the "floppers" (virtually) look like common street cars. IHRA also has the Top Fuel Funny Car, and Alcohol Funny Car (A/FC).

Pro Modified (Pro Mod) Various engine restrictions exist in this class but have very high power. Cars are allowed to run nitrous oxide or superchargers. Those drag cars using blowers are limited to 8.6 L (527 cubic inches) however cars using nitrous oxide can have up to 12.1 L (740 cubic inches).

Pro Stock (located both inside the NHRA and IHRA) have to hold stock appearance. NHRA cars can run no more than 8.2 L (500 cubic inches) while IHRA cars can run an upper limit of 13.4 L (820 cubic inches).

Pro Stock Bike (located only inside the NHRA) These basically are heavily modified motorcycles.

Also other popular classes of cars are Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Pro FWD, Super Comp/Quick Rod, Super Gas/Super Rod, Super Street/Hot Rod, Super Stock, Stock, Sport Compact (smaller engines in small cars), Top Sportsman,Top Dragster, Top fuel funny bike, Super Pro, Pro, and bike, and Junior Dragster.
